Spring Present

The tension is thick. I’m supposed to be happy and joyful and twitterpated. (Right?) But things that have been dormant for months are pushing up, sprouting, pressing through cracks into the light. They are visible. I can’t stop it. It’s Spring. This is what happens. The tension between the slumber of winter and the frenetic pace of spring.

A few years ago, I heard from a practitioner of Chinese medicine here in the Pacific Northwest that depression rates significantly increased in April. In our Western culture, there seems to be an expectation that we have a certain kind of mood associated with the season. Such expectations create room for judgement, self-doubt, criticism. There’s a disconnect for some of us between our actual experience and our expectations for what we believe we should be feeling. We don’t feel the way we “should” if and when the spring storms take their toll. And I don’t just mean the rain outside. I mean there is turmoil in springtime. It’s big! Shifts are happening on many levels.

Think about what is happening in your backyard. What is happening in nature? The soil is being upturned (without you touching it) by plants pushing up through the ground, breaking that barrier, pressing out into the light. New life shows its face in all sorts of places. Here in Walla Walla, more birds appear. The squirrels get frisky. That’s only the beginning.

If all these changes are happening in nature, don’t you think our bodies are influenced by the weather and the seasons too? Does your activity level change? Sleeping habits? What about the foods you eat? (Hmm…)

Since we’re on the topic of food, let’s remember that this is a great time to be gentle with our bodies. Spring is a time of rapid growth and cleansing. (There’s a reason we do so much “spring cleaning”.) So eat those beets for your liver. Drink plenty of water. Now is a great time to do a cleanse if you feel that’s appropriate. And eat your greens. Eat your greens. Eat your greens. Green tea is also a great antioxidant and detoxifier (among other good things), so try having a cup of green tea everyday for a week or two and see how you feel.

I am allowing my body and my heart a safe space to process the shift from winter to spring.

Because I’ve still been walking much of the time, I’m out in the elements, feeling the sun, wind, rain, and even snow this last week. Yards are being mowed. Flowers are blooming. Buds and blossoms are filling out trees. It’s change. It’s beautiful. It’s felt on many levels.

As we welcome the new season, I want three things for all of us.

1. A willingness and curiosity to understand ourselves and our honest experience of the seasonal transition.
2. Nourishment for our bodies and hearts.
3. Being present.

These three things go together. When we are curious about ourselves, investigating for deeper self-awareness and understanding, we learn what it is that truly nourishes us. When we nourish ourselves, we are better able to be present, and the present is where it’s all happening. Now. It’s where your power lies. It’s a place I like to hang out. I’d love to hang out together.

It’s Spring. Big things are happening. Cleansing. Detox. Rapid growth. Let us be present, deepen our understanding (love), and nourish our precious lives.

    “Be Present to your Now”…words to live by…thank you for your thoughtful attention to detail, the moments that make a significant impact if we’re noticing~ being present with the movement within me and yes, embracing the changes rather than fearing them so i can be more present, saying “yes” to this in this moment~ A, thank you for your nudge and affirmation of life!

    i love this idea that spring is not necessarily a quiet transition:
    it can be big + tumultuous + scary!
    + i can’t hide all my little green sprouts!
    so i will be taking this advice to be gentle w/ myself.

      No, sweet Sarai, you can’t hide all the sprouts. So get curious about them! This is an adventure. And we can still be gentle with ourselves, even in the midst of grand adventure.
