Gary V does WA again!

Gary Vaynerchuck of Wine Library TV has consistently good things to say about Washington wines. Here is the December 28 episode devoted to Washington wines. Listen to what he says about value. Washington wineries are working hard for the recognition they’re getting. And as Gary says, these wines would be going for almost twice as much if they were coming out of Napa Valley.

Wines reviewed:
2004 Woodward Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon Artist Series
2003 Nicolas Cole Cellars Camille
2004 Chateau Ste Michelle Ethos Syrah
2003 Cougar Crest Syrah Reserve

His comments on the Woodward Canyon Cab are interesting. Tight, highly structured, and tannic. This wine should open up in about four to six years. Honestly, I say grab it up before the price goes through the roof. Now at about $30 it’s an investment wine. 2012 you’ll be in for an amazing treat. That’s my prediction.

I wonder what would happen to the finish of the Camille over time? Maybe I’ll do a comparison of the 2003 and the 2004… see if the 2004 makes such a “big turn.”

Chateau Ste Michelle takes a beating. Gary passes giving it an 87 in strong disagreement with Wine Spectator’s 92 points. King’s brand fruit punch? Hoping not to offend anyone, I have to confess I’ve never been a big fan. So not terribly shocked by the results.

Cougar Crest gets compared to a Rhone Chateauneuf du Pape. Wow! Not only does this wine get an outstanding review, and the winemaker a personal commendation, but also the winery is building a gorgeous new facility on Highway 12 in Walla Walla that I can’t wait to tour. 94 points! Gary really loves it!!! Be warned, however, that the Reserve is priced at $55, not in the $30s as reported on WLTV. Still worth it.

Gary, if you really want to meet Debbie Hansen (the winemaker) you should come to Walla Walla.

I look forward to watching the episode. I like GV’s promotion of the WA region…regarding pricing, WL consistently undersells pretty much everybody in the country, and I’m not sure how they do it. That’s a mystery I’d like to solve!
